Delcam’s PowerMILL software chosen for micro-machining centre

Delcam’s PowerMILL CAM system has been chosen as the machining software at the West Midlands Micro-Machining Centre (www.micromachining.co.uk), which was opened recently in Birmingham, UK.

Other equipment acquired for the Centre includes a Matsuura LX-1 high-speed machining centre, an Agiecut Vertex wire EDM machine and an Agietron Compact 1 Micro die sink machine. Together with the University’s existing capabilities, this gives the Centre the ability to work with a wide range of ferrous, non-ferrous and non-metallic materials, including fully-hardened tool steels, titanium alloys, nickel-based superalloys, aluminium alloys, glasses and ceramics, composites and even diamond.

The formation of the Centre follows significant growth in worldwide demand for the manufacture of components having dimensions less than 10 mm and significantly larger components with micro features, for use in the medical, automotive, aerospace and electronics/communications industries. The principal objective of the Micro-Machining Centre is to help SMEs involved in key manufacturing sectors to develop and exploit micro-machining capabilities in order to diversify and improve manufacturing technology in the region. This should allow West Midlands’ organisations to compete successfully on the world stage and stimulate ventures into new or rapidly expanding markets.
