SilverHorse Racing Utilizes CNC Machines
Article by SE Manufacturing News (July Issue)
SilverHorse Racing, sponsored by Arthur Machinery and ProFORCE Integrated Solutions, recently attended a multitude of events in celebration and support of their growing manufacturing program. At the recent Tampa Machine Tool Show (TMTS) the team exhibited their #05 Mustang GT development car, which is used for product development and exhibition. At the same time, tooling needs and other manufacturing questions with vendors that were on hand were discussed, since visitors to the event also noticed a "sold” sign on one of the new machines at the show, a Doosan Lynx 220 LM Turn-Mill center.
Arthur Machinery aided the team in acquiring their new Doosan, which will be used for a variety of turned parts without having to take them off the machine to do secondary mill work since the machine has both radial and axial milling capability built into the turret. Although the team originally considered "just” a turning center for their immediate needs, the decision to go forward with a turning center with milling capability was an easy one to make given the highly competitive nature of the automotive aftermarket industry and the need to reduce labor costs through the automation that this machine provides to users. With a 10” max diameter, 2” thru-bore, and 6,000 RPM spindle, the machine is going to help chew through the team’s backlog of parts that customers have been ordering, while offering the high precision that the team demands of their parts and products.
Programming a turning center with live tooling can be a bit daunting, especially for a team that is used to worrying about corner entry of a car on a track instead of tool entry into a small part radius. To help solve this, ProFORCE Integrated Solutions, one of the team’s sponsors, has supplied the team with FeatureCAM 2007, including FeatureRECOGNITION, milling, turning, and mill-turning. The software has the capability of direct import of solid models, and can post the required G-code to not only the team’s Doosan, but also to their Milltronics VMC that handles their 3-axis mill work. Driver Marcello Canitano was on hand with ProFORCE’s owner Dwight Daniel at the recent American Contract Manufacturer’s Convention (AMCON) in Orlando, Florida. The event held at the Orlando convention center is a good way to meet contract manufacturers in a variety of industrial specialties to help solve difficult manufacturing needs.
Soon after the AMCON convention, Marcello was off to the Delcam North American Technical Summit held at the Omni hotel in Charlotte, NC. Delcam is the parent company of FeatureCAM, PartMaker, PowerMILL, and other high-end manufacturing software solutions. The two day event gave attendees the chance to see all the new features and benefits of Delcam’s software solutions, including keynote presentations by customers, including a presentation by SilverHorse Racing explaining how their team has grown from "just” a race team to a manufacturer and worldwide retailer of aftermarket products for the Ford Mustang, sold directly to customers, and through a dealer network of almost 50 dealers in 3 countries on two continents in only its first two years of existence.
With the spring shows completed, the team will be turning their attention to spooling up their new turning center, racing, and the summer Mustang shows, where they are sponsors of both SuperStangfest at Daytona International Speedway in June, and the Mustang Week event held at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Racing events at Daytona and Sebring are also planned, as well as a return to Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama, where the team stretched the legs of the #05 coupe at the 30th anniversary event for the Mustang Club of America last Labor Day weekend.
